49ers Make Significant Roster Decision On 1 Wide Receiver

NFL training camp brings both opportunity and harsh reality for players fighting for roster spots.

Every snap matters when injuries reshape depth charts.

The San Francisco 49ers faced that reality when a wide receiver’s season ended before it began.

“49ers placed WR Equanimeous St. Brown on the season-ending Injured Reserve List,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter wrote on X.

St. Brown suffered a foot injury during joint practice with the Denver Broncos.

It ends his comeback attempt after signing a one-year contract this offseason to compete for a roster spot amid major changes to San Francisco’s receivers.

The veteran brought size and blocking ability that fit well in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system. His versatility made him valuable as both a target and run blocker.

Losing that skill set hurts the 49ers’ depth, particularly with Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall dealing with their own injury concerns.

St. Brown’s IR designation opened a roster spot for quarterback Tanner Mordecai, who gives San Francisco depth behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones.

Without St. Brown, younger receivers Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins have an opportunity to step up, provided they can handle larger roles in an offense that demands precision and physicality.

With multiple injury situations to deal with, the 49ers must adapt quickly as they prepare for the season opener.
